As a gadget hound, I was instantly attracted to the promise of a machine that could do one of the most difficult household tasks, cleaning glass. I've read all the sites and tried the products (sprays, foams, sprays that foam, etc.) but invariably, I end up on the floor, staring at my sweaty, defeated self in a streaked mirror. The unit is solidly built and its distinctive yellow color makes it hard to miss in a garage full of crap like most of us have. There's only minor assembly of the blade piece and you're ready to go, although it wouldn't hurt to plug it in overnight to top off the battery. There are though very important steps to follow to get the best results. You'll see listed separately an equally-expensive spray bottle with a soft, padded blade by Karcher-get it.
You could make do with a microfiber cloth and spray of choice, but it makes prep work of the surface a breeze. Be liberal with the spray and be prepared to use the WV50 right after the glass is cleaned. Work horizontally and slowly across the glass, ensuring that your speed is appropriate to get the most suction and that you're making straight passes. Between passes, it is VERY important to wipe down the blade. Solution from the last pass will remain on the blade otherwise and will promote streaking. If you take your time, you shouldn't need to use a clean, dry microfiber to touch up very much beyond the very lateral edges of the surface.
We have all-glass shower doors that are very contemporary but a pain in the ass to clean.and they need it after every use, naturally. The WV50 is ideal for such a task, with the added advantage of not needing the initial preparation step if you've steamed them up enough with your shower. In just minutes we can get the job done and not have to feel the dread later in the day when we aren't in the mood to do any cleaning. Any glass surface is fair game for the WV50, including windows and mirrors. Just keep plenty of clean microfiber towels for blade maintenance.
One thing: when I first read about this device, I noticed the opaque tank on the front of the machine and assumed it was a reservoir for cleaning fluid that could be sprayed as you go. It is actually the collector for the squeegeed fluid. It looks relatively benign but you MUST get into the habit of emptying it after each session or day of use. If it is allowed to sit for any length of time, it'll take you back to your high school locker room days. It's pretty surprising how rancid that odor can get. Another thing: while it is sturdy, acquaint yourself carefully on how to separate the top and bottom sections. There are several internal plastic tabs that help keep the ends aligned, but they are extremely easy to break off if you don't press in the black segments to separate the ends.
Twisting will separate them-likely with one of those tabs in the process. If enough break off, the head will still attach but when the firm pressure necessary to apply against the glass is applied, the head will come off frequently and make the machine's use much more laborious and less effective. Honestly, this thing works quite well, and it's almost fun to use. I've cleaned about 25 large windows, and I'm having an argument with myself. Most 'infomercial' type specialty gadgets end up in a forgotten corner of the closet. But I'm not sure about this. It's a beautifully designed and manufactured piece of cleaning equipment that works very well, but has its minor hassles.
This is a way to use the excellent squeegee method of window cleaning in places where the flood of dirty slobber from a normal squeegee would be ruinous. Indoor window & mirror cleaning.some of your outdoor window cleaning.some of your car window cleaning.
Most helpful if you do a lot of windows at once. When the novelty factor wears off, you might use it for 40% of your window cleaning. Or 70%, or 0%. Honestly, I'm not sure where I'll end up. 4-stars or 2-stars? The squeegee method (vac or manual) is faster, easier, and uses way less rags/towels. You still have to scrub any stubborn spots by hand.
You still have to touch up some edges with a quick wipe. Bits of Windex spray out the exhaust vents. (see Note 1) 4. Try to keep it upright. Sideways squeegee action makes the spray-exhaust worse. You need to rinse out the Karcher when you're done (less than 90 seconds, with practice).
If you double-team it - one person with Karcher, one person follows with a rag for stubborn spots and final clean-up - you could to do a dozen large windows very quickly.under a minute each. In either case, I start with the Karcher, which removes 99% of the dirt. Stubborn spots then stand out, and can be easily worked with a scrubber or coarse rag. PROs: - It works quite well - Better than using rags/towels but only sometimes better than a regular squeegee - Rubber squeegee blade is top quality. Wipes very clean. Windex run-off does not flood the window sill, track, or wall below - Fewer side-streaks than a regular squeegee - Quality plastics, excellent fit, durable look & feel - Li-Ion battery gives 20 minutes between charges (see Note 2) - Ergonomic, lightweight, stands on end - Excellent all-around design OKs: - Quiet enough. Not annoying - User manual is helpful (but has some silly warnings. See Note 3) - Indicator light shows when charging is done CONs: - Windex sprays out the exhaust ports.
This is its biggest design flaw. (see Tips and Note 1) - You have to clean & recharge it each time. Power adapter wastes 2.1 watts while idle (see Note 4) - Limited life - Replacement battery not currently available (see Note 5) - Proprietary squeegee blade (replacement hassle & expense) -Size & Weight -14' tall, blade is 11' wide - 1.6 lbs -Tips -Vent diaper: I solved the drool/spray problem by sliding an old sock over the vents. See posted photo. Pen caps ensure air flow is not hampered.Notes -Note 1: Exhaust Spray - The manual's solution for this is to 'empty the dirt water reservoir.' But this problem starts after 2 or 3 windows.when the reservoir is 10-15% full.
Even if you keep the vac upright at all times. The spray is a combination of mist and droplets, which gets on the windows and potentially on furniture, etc. Plus, small amounts of aerated Windex drip off the bottom of the Vac. See 'vent diaper' tip above. Note 2: 20 minutes between charges - At about 20 seconds per large window, that's enough for 60 large windows. Note 3: Owner Manual - Available for download.Tries to be very helpful.Lots of specs.Favorite silly warning: 'Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces.' Note 4: Power adapter wastes 2.1 watts while idle.
(2.4 watts if attached to the vac.) That's $2 - 6 a year, if you leave it plugged in all the time. Seems like small change, but you have 5-15 of these wall warts in your home (over a billion in the US). Most of today's transformer plugs are smarter than this. Note 5: Replacement battery is not on Karcher's extensive parts replacement list. Comments & questions welcome.

This works very well and is tidy enough to use inside. The battery easily lasts for a full window cleaning session. Windex works okay, but is tedious and stinky, so I use a fleece covered foam window washer’s mop wetted with water and wrung out, then a thin line of dish soap along the length. This lets me quickly scrub off spider webs and bugs on the exterior windows.
For perfection, I carry a soft cloth to polish the top and bottom edges of a window pane. The device leaves about a quarter inch unsqueegeed, more if the window sill is wide. I used to use a window washer kit – a long rectangular bucket, a 14 inch squeegee and a 14 inch fleece covered sponge mop. The Karcher works better, and I use the mop from that totally manual kit. Pros: Very light so not at all tiring to use Stays on with just a push of the button, so you can grip it from the bottom to reach high places. Can run a long time before it has to be emptied. While best if kept vertical, it will work on glass tabletops Cons: Very light, easy to tip over when it’s standing up.
Flies apart when dropped, with minimal leakage. Accidentally comes apart if your fingers stray to the release buttons, or you press too hard on the windows. Windows with deep sills can’t be squeegeed to the very bottom of the glass.
Extension pole for it costs twice as much as the device itself. No easy way to attach it to any other pole.
Other thoughts: It helps to occasionally wipe off the blade with a towel to reduce streaking from gunk on the blade. The spray bottle with cloth scrubber might be a good idea, but I’ll stick with my mop. Similar to this one. This thing solved all the things I don't like about cleaning my own windows! No paper towel mess and waste, no nasty dripping, no trying to find which side of the window that smudge you missed is on. And, best of all, my windows don't look good, they look wonderful! They definitely look like I hired a professional.
I have tilt down windows which allow me to clean both the inside and outside at the same time. I used the Unger glass cleaner, which works very well:. And the Unger Speed Clean pad. Happy with both, but mostly impressed with the Karcher Window Vac.
I did wipe the blade with a rag after every swipe as some reviewers suggested, which was simple. It really gives you streak-free shine and is easy to clean at the end. Comes with great instructions too.

Love this little machine - My boss at the Pizza Shop has been using one for years on their huge window fronts, doors, pie case, everywhere customers touch the glass, and they love theirs. I've been watching this machine in action for years, and finally had to have one of my own for a job I dislike! It arrived quickly and worked right out of the box - was charged, ready to go! And when needed, it charged quickly. I Cleaned a long bathroom mirror, large porch window, and all my car windows in 15 minutes! Could not believe how Quick & Easy it was - that would have normally taken a lot of paper towels or coffee filters, elbow grease, and time.
This actually makes an icky job fun! Easy on and off button.
The only thing I don't care for is the release button, its where I put my fingers to work the machine; sometime it accidentally released, but I quickly click it back into place, that's why the 4-stars. Although I'm not sure where else you could the release buttons. It's made very well, and I'm happy with it so far:) Thanks! I bought this hoping that it might finally persuade my husband to help me clean the windows.
It didn't work on the husband but it has cut my window cleaning down drastically. I used to go through a lot of paper towel rolls doing all the windows in my house, but this eliminates the need for them completely and leaves behind a sparkling streak free window. No more chemicals needed either - I simply use warm soapy water and a scrubbing sponge and then use this to remove the excess water. It's literally cut down my cleaning time by more than 50% and my arms are grateful for that! If you have big windows and hate cleaning them then you need this.
My windows have never looked better! I was hesitating to try it since it arrived but I could not look at our windows covered in tiny finger prints of our 5 year old. Today I took it out of a box, charged it and in 10 minutes I could use it. You spray a window cleaner and push a button on the gadget and it starts sucking and wiping with a rubber tip at the same time, your window cleaner and dirt go to a container on the gadget that you empty once you are done. Oh, what a joy!
I cleaned all the windows on our first floor today-spotless and shiny! What a great helper for cleaning your home because cleaning is hard, wiping is hard but thi vacuum just suck it all out and it is streak free!
I don't mind using a bucket and standard squeegee on the outside of the windows, as it won't matter if I slop water. Plus, they are dirtier, so they require some rubbing. I sure don't like making a mess indoors, however. So when I saw this, I read the reviews and decided to try it out. I totally love it.
I use the Etorre Squeegee Off concentrated solution. I mix only a half tablespoon in an old Windex spray bottle and fill the rest with water. Since the only real issues with my indoor windows are dust, fingermarks, and pet nose marks-no scrubbing is necessary. Using this Karcher, window washing is fast, easy, and generates no steaks or water mess.
Oh, don't get me wrong. It does take s little trial and error. Do not press hard, watch the angle, and DON'T let the sucked up liquid get more than halfway to the 'Full' Mark. If you let the liquid get too full, it tends to spray out the side if you work sideways (like at the bottom of the window). I have a lot of windows, and I was able to clean them all on the back side of the house on one charge. Just don't let it run unnecessarily (turn it off between windows).
